Edited and with an introduction by John Yau
Fetish
An Anthology

At some point, we all crave something. That craving — an unnatural longing — can be as innocuous as a strong desire for chocolate or a cigarette. Chinese food. Crocodile leather heels. An angora sweater. [Book Cover] But at the heart of all intense desires lie impulses heavy with psychosexual implications. This anthology put together by New York cultural hipster John Yau explores some of the more extreme variants on this theme. Many of the stories in Fetish are wildly funny — absurd to those of us with a "normal" mindset — and others expose readers to a psychical underbelly, at once menacing and intriguing. Most appear here in print for the first time, and one story marks the author's appearance in print.

Sex with corpses, John Yau's feet, sadomasochism, and magical aerosol sprays are here discussed — in depth — alongside pederasty, unfulfilled and unfulfillable longings, aching for lost love and dreaming of a body not one's own. Some of the thirty-five writers included are Paul Bowles, Charles Bukowski, Michael Brodsky, Guy Davenport, Jessica Hagedorn, Evelyn Lau, Jonathan Lethem, Gordon Lish, Gary Lutz, Harry Mathews, Eileen Myles, Beth Nugent and Lynne Tillman.

John Yau has taught as visiting professor at many universities, including UCal Berkeley, University of Texas at Austin, Brown University and New York's School of Visual Arts. A poet, art critic, editor and writer of fiction, his work has appeared in Vogue, Artforum, Interview, the L. A. Times and many other publications. His fiction is published by Black Sparrow Press.
