Gordon Lish
Self-Imitation of Myself

Self-Imitation of Myself is the third collection of short stories from the world of fiction's most eminent champion of the short story. These stories will challenge readers with their inescapable honesty, wit, obsession, and with its seductive and alluring prose. The stories in this collection share no common theme — other than their humanity — no pat structure. In each case, the narrative is conveyed distinctively, with a form unique and appropriate to the story.

Like all great works of art, these stories alter our perception of reality and of fiction. They shock, they assault, they challenge. For those who like their narratives straight and their elegies sweet, Self-Imitation of Myself will not satisfy. But for those who appreciate, as Esquire magazine says, Lish's ability to "bend the form into striking shapes with all the courageous fervor of an alchemist whipping up recipes for gold," this new collection will meet or exceed the highest expectations.

Gordon Lish is the author of eight previously published works of fiction. This body of work, together with his activities as an editor at Knopf (1977-1995), the editor of The Quarterly (1987-1997), and fiction editor at Esquire (1969-1977), have placed him at the forefront of the American literary scene. The editor of three anthologies and author of two works of nonfiction, he has taught writing and related matters at Yale, Columbia, and New York University. A 1984 Guggenheim Fellow, Lish received an honorary doctor of letters from the State University of New York.
